Generalmajor Emil Hell, born 26.5.1864 at Giegel/West Prussia, died
24. 1. 1931 at Gr. Grieben/West Prussia. Originally a field artillery
officer, he entered Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr. 1 as a Fahnenjunker on
the 1. 10. 1884 and was commissioned on the 13. 6. 1885. After service
as a battery officer and battalion adjutant he attended the war academy
and spent most of his career from then onwards on the General Staff
apart from a tour as a battery commander in FAR 20 (1901-1903) and as a
battalion commander in FAR 73 (1909-1912). By the outbreak of war he
was already an Oberst (22. 5. 1914) and Chief of Staff of XX Army
Corps. Serving in senior staff posts throughout the war, he briefly
commanded the 28th Infantry Division from 13. 6. 1918 - until returning
to staff duties as COS of Heeresgruppe Herzog Albrecht von Württemberg
on 7. 9. 1918. His final appointment was COS of Heeresgruppe Kiew from
31. 10. 1918. He retired on 2. 4. 1919.
Awarded the PLM on 21. 9. 1916, OPLM on 11. 1. 1917 and promoted to Generalmajor on 20. 5. 1917.
