This was one of the instances where a shipowner brought settlers to Maryland in order to claim the lands to which he would thus become entitled. The Hellens are probably French Huguenots. Christian Hillan, a Huguenot goldsmith of London, was perhaps a representative of the same family, though there is no proof of this.
